Refining skills - strengthening brain connections

As highlighted in the Early Years Learning Framework V2.0 Playbased learning and intentionality: Neural pathways and connections in the brain are stimulated when children are fully engaged in their play as they make plans, create characters, solve problems, develop self awareness and learn how to socialise, negotiate and think with others. Children’s immersion in their play illustrates how play enables them to simply enjoy being.

Between 3 and 5 years of age children begin to engage in and practice higher order thinking such as symbolic thought, more complex language patterns, and advanced pretend play leading to strengthening of neural pathways that last a lifetime.

The foundation for healthy brain development is built through everyday experiences, responsive relationships and enriched environments a child is immersed in their early years.
